[Review] “Book of Mirrors” by E. O. Chirovici – a completely disappointing mystery novel

I read this book because of a personal interest. The author, E. Chirovici, was a Romanian writer who caused quite the stir with The Book of Mirrors, his first novel written in English and published to an international public – novel which became a sensation overnight. I, too, am an aspiring Romanian author and I’ve been working on my mystery novel for more than two years, hoping to someday publish it to an English audience. You can see why I’d be instantly hooked by the premise. I had very high hopes before reading this book. They were shattered from the first 20 pages or so.... Read More | Share it now!

Read More | Share it now!

Xerxes, regele perşilor) mi s-a părut ridicolă.
Read More | Share it now!

You're A Scientist! (Make Your Own Mistakes Book 1) by Phil Edwards [Book Review]]

You’re A Scientist! (Make Your Own Mistakes Book 1) by Phil Edwards [Book Review]]

Saw this free ebook advertised on the Fake Science Facebook page and decided to try it out. It was a fun little Choose your own Adventure book, set in the Fake Science Lab, where you started out as a beaker cleaner with 5 basic choices (Explore space/Become a biologist/Become a chemist/Become an earth scientist/Become a physicist). The choices branched out in many fun and unexpected ways and while most of the ends were bad ones (where the lab mortician usually comments something random about your silly death), I did reach some good ends too. In fact, the true ending (and quite a hilarious one indeed) could be reached in more than one way.... Read More | Share it now!

Read More | Share it now!

If on a Winter's Night a Traveler, by Italo Calvino [Book Review]

If on a Winter’s Night a Traveler, by Italo Calvino [Book Review]

About a quarter into this book, I thought: ‘Wow. What an extraordinary read.’
Halfway through, it became quite repetitive.
After 3/4 out of it, I found it rather boring.
In the end, I was definitely disappointed.... Read More | Share it now!

The Picture of Dorian Gray, by Oscar Wilde [Book Review]

The Picture of Dorian Gray, by Oscar Wilde [Book Review]

** spoiler alert ** I started reading “The picture of Dorian Gray” after receiving several recommendations from my friends. The synopsis seemed interesting, it was categorized as one of the greatest classics ever, I was sure I would enjoy it. But boy, was I wrong.... Read More | Share it now!

The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, by Adam Douglas [Book Review]

** spoiler alert ** In the beginning, I had rated it three stars, but upon further thought, I realized that that was a bit too much. While the book was cute, silly and lighthearted, I had three main problems with it.... Read More | Share it now!

The Ice Princess, by Camilla Läckberg [Book Review]

The Ice Princess, by Camilla Läckberg [Book Review]

This has to be one of the worst mystery novels I’ve read so far. In fact, I’m not even sure if it’s supposed to be ‘mystery’. More like ‘character discovers x clue, reader is not told what it actually contains, character suddenly reveals it much later on in a really dramatic, Scooby-Doo fashion’. And this happened throughout all the book.... Read More | Share it now!

Fruits Basket [Anime Review]

Fruits Basket [Anime Review]

Fruits Basket is a show that might certainly sound interesting the moment you check the synopsis. People turning into the Chinese zodiac animals, dark and mysterious secrets surrounding them, cute, clueless main heroine – isn’t that a great premise for a shoujo series? But only as long as it’s executed accordingly.... Read More | Share it now!

Higurashi: When They Cry [Anime Review]

Higurashi: When They Cry [Anime Review]

Higurashi is a really confusing, complex and difficult to explain anime. Some may view it as belonging to the horror or psychological genre; some may find it as a really weird harem series containing crazy, killer lolis; others may consider it a failure since it doesn’t seem to belong to any of the afore-mentioned genres. Considering how much amount Higurashi incorporates, all views are understandable; this certainly isn’t a series that’s easy to comprehend by everyone. Higurashi is a mixture of mystery, blood, humor, romance and especially nice moral stories; but above all – Higurashi should be perceived as a really challenging logic problem.... Umineko: When They Cry [Anime Review]

Umineko: When They Cry [Anime Review]

A few things before reading this review:
-yes, I am one of those who have played the sound novel before watching the anime;
-no, I will not make this an essay of comparison between the two, nor will I praise the novel over the anime; however, it is inevitable that certain comparisons will indeed appear, in order to explain the flaws of the anime;
-this review might seem a bit unfriendly to someone who has no clue what Umineko is about. In fact, it’s much more addressed to those who have partially or completely watched the anime/read the manga/played the game.... Read More | Share it now!
